Number of doctor that left nigeria this year

New Telegraph reported that President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Mike Ogirima, confirmed that between 10,000 and 15,000 Nigerian doctors are working outside the country. Ogirima told that about 90 per cent of those working outside the country are trained in Nigeria where they acquired their capacity.

The NMA President noted that between 40,000 and 60,000 doctors are working in the country.

Ogirima said:

“Nigeria has trained these doctors while other countries are making use of them. That is a sad thing. Of course in a country where the working environment is not conducive, what do you expect? “So, we expect the government to improve the working environment, provide the necessary tools for the doctors to work with and give them needed welfare to encourage them to stay in the country.”

Just last month, over 500 doctors took examination for possible recruitment placement abroad.

For Nigerian doctors looking for employment in the United States, they write the United States Medical Licensing Examination, while those seeking employment opportunities in the United Kingdom write examination with the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB). Unfortunately, the conditions driving the migration have worsened with more doctors working for several months in the country without salaries.

While providing an insight into the trend, a top member of the NMA told New Telegraph that in 2015, a total number of 715 doctors departed the shores of Nigeria, seeking greener pastures in foreign countries.

“Annually, the number of Nigerian doctors departing the country to work abroad ranges between 500 to 700,” a top NMA official told our correspondent. Giving details of the doctor’s migration, a medical doctor who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said more Nigerian doctors move to the UK while a fewer number go to Canada.

“Their final destination is, however, the United States (U.S.), which offers them better remuneration and welfare package. “For these Nigerian doctors, working in the UK, Canada and other countries, including the Caribbean, working in these foreign nations is a stepping stone,” he said.

A barber claims he has been forced to completely change his appearance – after people repeatedly made him feel like a terrorist. John Essien, 37, who is black British, said he noticed people whispering about him and refusing to sit next to him on public transport.

On one occasion while on the tube, he said people even fled the carriage he was in when his hairdressing clippers started vibrating in his bag.

To try and stop the cruel behaviour, he has shaved off his beard and stopped carrying a rucksack – and now says people have a completely new opinion of him.

John said: “One time I was sat on the train and I had clippers in my bag and they went off.

John, who has four daughters, admits he could understand some alarm but wishes people were not so judgmental. The qualified hairdresser who lives in Amersham, Bucks., said it started to get to him when people were ignoring him.

John even says on some occasions he felt intimidated by police – with officers standing in his way and watching him as he purchased tickets for public transport.

He added: “I didn’t want to be judged all the time. I don’t want to feel racism every day. “I just want to speak out and have people hear about it. “All I am doing is going to work, trying to fit in with society and being polite to people every day.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that two persons died, while eight others sustained injuries in an accident along the Ilo-Awela Road in Sango-Ota, Ogun State today.

The Unit Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, Mr. Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, made the confirmation while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Sango-Ota.

He said the accident was caused by brake failure at about 8.20 a.m. Oguntoyinbo said the incident involved two buses, one of which was a commercial bus.

He stated, “The brake of the commercial bus failed and it crashed into another bus at the toll gate, resulting in the death of two persons and injuring eight others.

“The bodies of the dead have been deposited at the morgue of the Ota General Hospital in Sango-Ota, while the injured persons are receiving treatment in the same hospital.”

Oguntoyinbo counseled motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before putting them on the road.
