Mental Sickness, Bigamy, Adultery: Actress Mercy Aigbe & Husband In War Of Words

When news broke towards the end of last week that the marriage of star actress, Mercy Aigbe to Lanre Gentry was about to hit the rock, even with her pictures showing her battered face all over the blogosphere, many people hoped that it was a publicity stunt. However, as Saturday Beats learnt, the marriage may have fallen apart irretrievably. In a chat with her estranged husband Lanre, he insisted that he had never beaten his wife. He further claimed that the ace actress has mental illness which he said is affecting her.
Gentry revealed that Mercy had been battling the illness for a while but that he had always been there for her all through the years they had been together.
He said, “I am not fighting with Mercy, she is the one plotting how to get out of the marriage and I am not a party to that because I have never touched her and I will never do so. She has mental problem and that is what is disturbing her for now. There is a place I normally go to help her get herbal concoction to stabilise her condition, I would go there soon to get the herbal remedy for her. I don’t care about whatever anybody writes, I have granted an interview with the person that I trust.”
The auto dealer claimed that the mother of two had been unfaithful to him, adding that she left his house for over a month.
He said, “Mercy is committing bigamy because she is still married to me and another man has rented an apartment for her. She has left my house for almost a month and she has been camped with the man. Marriage is not by force, I cannot force her to stay with me because I am not handicapped. She spends my money. The car she uses, I bought it for her and it cost me about N9.8m, I have the receipt with me. I don’t have anything against Mercy but she should continue with whatever she has against me.”
During the week, it was reported that the actress had obtained a restraining order against her husband. But in his words, Gentry regarded that restraining order as a “kangaroo injunction.”
“I don’t have any issue with Mercy. She has found a better offer than the love I give her so she wants to move on. I have helped her career and put her in the limelight but now she believes she needs another man that she can dupe. I have God by my side. I still saw Mercy during the week, Wednesday to be precise. It was reported that she obtained a restraining order against me but the truth is that it is a kangaroo injunction. Is it possible for the court to restrain me from seeing my child or a person that took my property out of my house? Is it possible? I learnt she went to the police but they did not lend her a listening ear so she decided to use the judiciary and we would meet there. She went to the Lagos State government and was told that they prefer to reconcile marriages instead of dissolving them. I have never beaten Mercy and I would never do such,” he said.
When asked if he still loves his wife, the estranged husband who has a child with the actress simply said, “For now I cannot say that I love my wife but before, I loved her.”
When Saturday Beats reached out to the actress, a source from her camp who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that it was laughable that Gentry would claim that the actress has mental problems. The source said that the estranged husband turned the actress to his cash cow.
“It is a big lie, the truth is that Lanre Gentry has been living off Mercy’s hard earned money. In fact, Mercy is his walking ATM. He does not do anything and to make matters worse, he does not pay the children’s school fees. The man is a mad man. A court paper was served on him on Wednesday and when they took it to his office, he claimed that he was Lanre Gentry’s personal assistant, unknown to him that his picture was taken while he was signing for the document he received. He is just shooting himself in the foot.
“He knows within himself that Mercy can afford to get a house in Lekki if she wishes to do so. He is just a pathetic liar and he should find another angle. Mercy does not have mental illness and if he wants to dent her image, he should look for another angle to do so,” the source said.
Meanwhile the actress also refuted all claims by her husband via her Instagram handle on Friday. She wrote, “Dear Lanre Gentry, it breaks my heart that I have to do this but as it is, you have left me with no choice. I have had sleepless nights because I just couldn’t comprehend why someone I loved, someone with whom I have a child will be hell bent on destroying me, I just cannot comprehend it.I read with tears in my eyes all the lies you fabricated against me. Lies you feel will justify your inhumane act, lies you feel will gain you public sympathy and lies calculated to bring my person to public opprobrium. You claim I am mentally unstable, that you have caught me with different men. I do not take care of my parents and that a man rented an apartment for me. LIES all LIES.Dear hubby, I challenge you to back your claims with PROOF!!!!!!!!! Lanre you forget quickly, you forget how I have laboured and stood by you all these years, even though all what I was getting from you was constant beating, harassment, threat to my life and threat to destroy my image if I dared to leave you. You must prove all your allegations otherwise God knows I am going to add another lawsuit to the one on ground. Although my Team has been pleading with me to stay silent, but I have come to realize that you want to ride on my keeping mum.”
In a telephone conversation with Saturday Beats, she maintained that she would rather remain silent on the matter till the court decides the fate of her husband who has been charged with wife battery allegations. She said that she believed in the Nigerian justice system and she is optimistic that justice would prevail.

Governor Wike is unfit to rule, he should resign – APC

– The APC has chided Governor Wike for failing to keep his vow to sue the FG over the $43m recovered in Ikoyi
– The party say Wike is an alarmist whose single agenda since he assumed office as the governor of Rivers state is to destroy Amaechi by any means
– The APC alleged that Wike has put Rivers state account in red through looting and the borrowing of over N100 billion from banks, without investing it in any tangible projectsThe Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for immediate resignation of Governor Nyesom Wike over alleged nuisance.
The party made the call in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Chief (Dr.) Davies Ibiamu Ikanya in which it berated Wike for failing to keep his vow to “sue the Federal Government if it fails to return the $43m found in a luxury apartment in Ikoyi Lagos to the Rivers State Government within one week”.
According to the statement, ‘’Wike had claimed that the money belonged to the Rivers State Government and was part of the funds allegedly looted by his immediate past predecessor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the current Minister of Transportation.
Rivers APC said “It is now over two weeks since Governor Wike issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to return the money to the Rivers State Government or be sued accordingly.
Governor Wike had claimed that he has records, documents and facts to prove that the contentious $43m was kept by Amaechi. Apart from Rt. Hon. Amaechi vehemently denying the accusation as one from the pit Governor Wike had claimed that he has records, documents and facts to prove that the contentious $43m was kept by Amaechi. Apart from Rt. Hon. Amaechi vehemently denying the accusation as one from the pit of hell; it is on record that Mr. Abayomi Oke, the suspended DG of the National Intelligence Agency, has claimed ownership of the money, thereby exonerating Amaechi.
“Wike’s failure to sue the Federal Government as he vowed to do is the height of his shameful theatrics and repulsive actions that have brought shame and public odium to Rivers State and her people. We, therefore, demand without equivocation, the immediate resignation of Wike as the Governor so as to save the good people of Rivers State further embarrassment” it said.

South African novelist Karel Schoeman commits suicide

South African novelist Karel Schoeman committed suicide aged 77, local media said Tuesday, with a farewell letter revealing he had long contemplated such a fate and tried so before.

The Afrikaans writer and supporter of the anti-apartheid movement authored 19 novels and several historical articles and was honoured by former president Nelson Mandela.
“I decided years ago to end my life‚ or try anyway,” he said in the letter dated April 27 and released Tuesday by his lawyer Carl van Rensburg.

In the letter he indicated his wish to “voluntarily cease the use of food and drink and end his life through a process of so-called mortification”.

It was his second attempt at killing himself.

“An attempt at 75 was interrupted by circumstances and in the meantime I have turned 77. Thus it is necessary to tackle the matter meaningfully while I still have full movement‚ physical freedom and possess the spiritual clarity to make a logical decision … and carry it out effectively.”

His method of suicide was not immediately clear.

“The decision to take one’s own life is naturally a very personal one which I would not blindly advise anyone to take. For me‚ I am grateful to be able to make and follow through the decision.”

He had been living at a retirement home in the central city of Bloemfontein.

In the letter he said he hoped that committing suicide would help bring about an open discussion about the South African law which prohibits voluntary euthanasia.

South African retired Anglican archbishop and anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu last year said he would like to be allowed the option of dignified assisted death.

CBN increases dollar supply to forex market by 40%

To sustain naira gain, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday pumped in a total sum of $388.66 million into the forex market, about 40 per cent higher than what it sent to the foreign market last week.
There was a specific instruction to banks, and other retail segment of the interbank market, to pay required attention to requests of dollars by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
For close to two weeks, the CBN has been focusing on the wholesale and invisible segments of the market, which dealers said were still puting pressure dollar-demand on the economy.
The wholesale demand, which usually comes from the manufacturers, is yet to be properly addressed by regulatory authorities of the market.
However, the highest dollar that the bank pushed into the market in March 2017 at a go, was valued at over $346 million, which reportedly eased access to foreign exchange at the time under reference
But the CBN spokesman, Isaac Okoroafor, told newsmen that the apex bank was nearly embarrassed by Tuesday’s forex trading, which saw naira lose about 10 per cent value over dollars from the previous week’s transactions.
He said that the sum of $87.885 was for spot sales, while $300.8 million was sold as forwards requests in anticipation of demands by both the real sector and SMEs.
According to Okoroafor, the introduction of forwards window was based on thre planks of 30, 45 and 60 days respectively.
Okoroafor stated that the CBN sold $100.95 as 30-day forwards; $110.48 million as 45-day forwards and $99.37 as 60-day forwards.
“We will continue with the intervention to monitor operations of the Bureau de Change (BDC) segment of the market, along with other operators, to meet the needs of low-end users.
“The Bank remained resolute in ensuring that it supplies enough forex to genuine customers and in the process sustain the liquidity in the market such that never again will naira slip below normal adjustments, based on demands, ” he stated.
With this development, he expressed hope that the CBN will inch even more closer to its objective of convergence of the rates in the interbank and BDC segments.
The apex bank last week suspended some banks for alleged diversion of dollars meant for SMEs to other big time users, but later let three of the banks off the hook.CBN increases dollar supply to forex market by 40%

Soyinka urges EFCC to prosecute detractors on fight against corruption

Nigeria’s Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, on Saturday in Lagos, called for the prosecution of those he described as detractors in the fight against corruption in the country.

Prof. Soyinka made the call at the opening of his Vision of the Child Art Exhibition, 2017 edition, at Freedom Park, Lagos with the theme: Enhance the Heritage; Advance the Future, in celebrating Lagos at 50.
He said that most times, the anti-corruption agency was sent on the wrong track or wild goose chase, resulting to no prosecution.

“When we talk about corruption, is it not time we legislate against detractors, who deliberately create distraction. Say for instance, the money just found in Lagos.

‘‘One governor claimed that the money belongs to his state government, claiming a proceed from the sale of some turbines and so on.

‘‘It is a criminal act of distraction. He knew very well that he was lying, that the money was not his, but belongs to someone else.

‘‘Obviously, acting in the interest of those accused of corruption that to me is connivance and collaboration with corrupt people.

‘‘I think such people should be criminalised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),” he said.

Soyinka, who commended the art works of the children, expressed the hope that with children exposing the corruption acts of the adults Nigeria would be in for better days.

Speaking , the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, said the commission’s operation was not limited to investigation and prosecution of offenders, but also to enlighten the public on the dangers of corruption.

Magu said the painting exhibition was one way to educate and enlighten people about corruption, stressing that the paintings exposed  some ways in which adults were involved in corrupt practices.

“My views of the Nigerian child, from the across the plains, the hills, the forests and the swamps of Nigeria are those of innocence and boundless creativity.

‘‘However, like most of the older generation, many of our youths seem also to be trapped in cocoons of corruption, which have built around them.

“However, Professor Soyinka’s “Vision of the Child” project and the sheer breadth and depth of these paintings by these youngsters, demonstrate very well that our children have an acute awareness of what is going on around them and are breaking free of the shackles of corruption.

“They also show the determination of the younger generation for their voices to be heard.

‘‘The uncomfortable questions they are asking us are; how and why did we allow this beautiful country to be turned into the cesspit of corruption?

“These paintings speak to all strata of our society and to every flank of the war against corruption and the common message I see running through all of them is: we will never give up on the ideals of a just and equitable society.

“The vision I see so eloquently expressed in these wonderful pieces of art is that of the irrepressible Nigerian spirit, refusing to be put down and reaching out for the Nigeria of our collective dreams: the Nigeria where our commonwealth is used for our common good and not looted by a few greedy, self-centred lot.

“I can confirm to you that corruption is already fighting back.

‘‘But, even though massive resources have been deployed to fight back at EFCC, we draw strength and encouragement to carry on from the likes of these children and Prof Wole Soyinka.

‘‘We draw the courage to soldier on from millions of ordinary Nigerians whose desires are for equity and social justice,” he said.

Magu said that the EFCC was not personal in the discharge of its mandate; stressing that its personnel only fear God, with the guiding principles by the Rule of Law and the overriding interest of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 38 students selected from different schools, participated in literary and painting works at the exhibition. (NANSoyinka urges EFCC to prosecute detractors on fight against corruption

Group wants Senate to probe Shehu Sani’s credentials

A group, Kaduna Central People’s Forum (KCPF) has called on the Senate to investigate Senator Shehu Sani over alleged certificate forgery and perjury.
Addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday, the group’s Chairman and Secretary, Malam Muhammad Edris and Alhaji Aminu Sha’aibu, called on the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General of the Federation and INEC to work together and investigate the matter. …Group wants Senate to probe Shehu Sani’s credentials
The group said at the time the 2015 Senatorial election was conducted, Senator Sani was not qualified to vie for the position “given that he lied on oath to INEC.”
“For starters, Shehu Sani claimed on oath in his deposition to INEC that he undertook his secondary school education between 1981 and 1984 at Government Science College, Kagara, under the Senior Secondary School (SSS) system.
“This claim is clearly false as 6-3-3-4 system of education was not in place in the country during the material period,” they said.
The group said while Sani was in secondary school up to 1989 as indicated in his INEC affidavit of personal particulars, it would be impossible for him to, at the same time, attend the Kaduna Polytechnic between 1984  and 1986 for his National Diploma (ND) in Water Engineering.
“These inherent contradictions provoked further poser on the number of years Shehu Sani spent in the secondary school,” the group said.
When contacted, Senator Sani’s Special Adviser on Politics and Ideology, Suleiman Ahmed, declined comments saying the proper thing to do was to go to the institutions where the documents were earned to confirm the claims.
“People cannot just wake up with spurious claims and you expect us to give it credibility by responding. These are weighty allegations which cannot be treated by mere verbal counter; so I urge journalists to do the right thing if they want to be fair,” he stated.

Chinese scientists make big leap in quantum computing

Chinese scientists have built the world’s first quantum computing machine that goes beyond the early classical, or conventional, computers, paving the way to the ultimate realization of quantum computing beating classical computers.
Scientists announced their achievement at a press conference in the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies of University of Science and Technology of China on Wednesday.
Many scientists believe quantum computing could in some ways dwarf the processing power of today’s supercomputers.
The manipulation of multi-particle entanglement is the core of quantum computing technology and has been the focus of international competition in quantum computing research.
Recently, Chinese leading quantum physicist Pan Jianwei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and his colleagues — Lu Chaoyang and Zhu Xiaobo, of the University of Science and Technology of China, and Wang Haohua, of Zhejiang University — set two international records in quantum control of the maximal numbers of entangled photonic quantum bits and entangled superconducting quantum bitsChinese scientists make big leap in quantum computing

Space X to launch 4,000 broad band internet satellites into space by 2019

Elon Musk’s SpaceX wants to start launching thousands of internet-providing satellites during 2019.
Structured in multiple phases through 2024, the 4,425 satellites would use advanced mesh networking to offer high speed broadband services in rural areas that still have to rely on dial-up or simply don’t have access to any Internet service options.
SpaceX is currently planning on launching the first prototype of the broadband-providing satellite into space by the end of 2017 and a second prototype during early 2018.
If successful, satellites will be launched in batches over the next decade. The company is projecting a $30 billion revenue stream from the satellite network by 2030 and may increase the total number of satellites orbiting in space by an additional 7,500, if approved by the government.
This broadband distribution strategy is opposite of other internet service providers. Companies like Comcast and Time Warner have to invest heavily in fiber cable installation, which involves navigating property rights as well as digging trenches to install miles of fiber-optic cable.
Of course, SpaceX will have infrastructure costs on the ground, specifically to help manage broadband resources in areas of high congestion.Space X to launch 4,000 broad band internet satellites into space by 2019

Is NBA in crisis?

The present state of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is debatable. While some lawyers say the association is not in crisis, others want the public to know that NBA is in serious crisis.
The NBA is the umbrella body of all lawyers in Nigeria with a membership strength of about 106, 000 lawyers which makes it the largest association of lawyers in Africa. The NBA is not seen as just a group, but an elitist and well educated one.
The NBA president, who is the chief spokesman of the association, enjoys respect both nationally and internationally. This position is one that every lawyer who gets to a certain level in his career wants to occupy.  Is NBA in crisis?
Muritala Abdulrahseed, one of the high ranking officers in the Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud-led NBA, said during a telephone interview that “there is no crisis in the NBA.”
According to him, the problem with the NBA is “over politicization and high wire politics in which NBA is seen like any other political arrangement just like you have political parties. And if one wins, the other must stay in opposition and try to bring down the party in government.”
He advised lawyers to shun anything that will bring the association to disrepute even as he extends the olive branch to other lawyers.
According to him, “the day you start destroying yourself, others will join you.”
However, Darlington Onyekwere, an Abuja-based lawyer disagreed with this position. According to him, whoever said that there is no crisis in the NBA is living in self denial.
Onyekwere, who said that there were both constitutional and leadership crisis within the association, pointed at the March 30, 2017 judgment of a Federal High Court Abuja, delivered by Justice Tsoho in the case of Olasupo Ojo V. Registered Trustee of the NBA, in which the Federal High Court upheld the amended NBA constitution, adopted at the Delegates Conference held in Calabar in August 2001 as the extant law.
The issue before the court was that the 2009, 2013 and 2015 (which introduced electronic voting that produced the AB Mahmoud-led exco) amended constitutions of the NBA were not registered at the CAC as required and thus offended the mandatory requirement of Sections 597 to 600 of CAMA.
The court in the declarative judgment ordered that not only were the 2009, 2011, 2015 NBA Constitutions nullified to the extent of their inconsistency to the extant Constitution but also voided all actions , decision and activities howsoever described, already taken, or intended/planned to be taken and carried out by the defendant, her officers, staff, organs, committees,  branches, members, representatives and or any other person acting on behalf or in the name of the NBA in any manner whatsoever including but not limited to conduct of election in branches of the NBA and plan/program/notice for election into national offices of the NBA pursuant to the NBA 2015 constitution.
It is trite law that the court of law guides its judgments jealously and every judgment of court must be obeyed immediately. Arising from this, Mr. Olasupo Ojo, through his lawyer Mr. A. C. Ozioko, petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen who double as the chairman of the Body of Benchers (BOB) to take over the management and administration of the affairs of the NBA by operation of the law. The petitioner referred to all the current members of the NBA exco as “ousted”. The petitioner mentioned Section 10 (2), (3) (b) and (4) of the Legal Practitioners Act, 2004 that provides for the functions of the BOB.
A letter was also written to Access Bank Plc requesting for suspension of operations on NBA accounts pending the takeover of the administration and management of the affairs of the association by the Caretaker Committee to be set up by the Chief Justice of Nigeria
A very senior lawyer who does not want his name in print said that after this judgment, AB Mahmoud-led NBA exco has engaged in several acts of impunity for staying in office.
He said that after the homes of judges were raided nationwide recently, the NBA demanded that the affected judges be suspended in line with the rule of law and now wondered why the same NBA exco should stay in office after the March 30 judgment.
In a swift reaction, the NBA president, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), said that the association was not in contempt of court. Mahmud said the leadership was aware of the judgment which nullified all NBA constitutions since 2001 and had engaged with members and NBA trustees on the way forward.
He said the association has appealed the judgment and asked for a stay of execution, adding that further meeting would be held with the trustees “to discuss the judgment and find a way around it.”
Mahmoud said: “In the meantime, the Bar Association has appealed that judgment and there is also an application to set it aside on the ground that the action was improperly constituted, the plaintiff having sued the wrong parties.
“We think this is very disruptive and we shouldn’t allow it to distract us from what we were doing.
“We understand the need to respect court judgments, but we have been advised that once we have filed an application for stay, we’ll not be technically in contempt of that judgment.
“There is also another judgment which was brought to my attention which says exactly the opposite about the NBA constitution. These are part of the challenges which I think we should be able to overcome. Hopefully we should build enough consensuses in the Bar to address these challenges.”
Asiwaju Adegboyega Solomon Awomolo, on his part, wrote to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and minister of Justice Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN in his capacity as the leader of the Bar.
Awomolo said the issues that paralysed the NBA between 1992 and 1998 started like a joke.
The implication of this judgment, according to Awomolo, is so grave. He added that officers of the NBA, who are living in denial, and pretending as if nothing has changed or happened, have moved on to schedule activities towards the 2017 Bar conference in August.
He thereafter called on the AGF to liaise with the Trustees and call the NBA officers to order. “They should forthwith obey the rule of law and respect the association as an institution so that the matter may not escalate beyond control,” Awomolo said.
